Calories, Calories, Calories - To Count or Not To Count? by Mark Butler
What is a calorie, and do you want to count it? Well, it is a unit of measurement. It measures energy. Just like a mile measures length or a gallon measures volume. A calorie measures the energy of a food or liquid. When you eat something it supplies energy to your body so your body can function. If you are not active and eat too much those extra calories that are not used are then stored in your body as fat.My grandmother once told me, a long time ago that I could eat 100 lbs of celery and never gain a single pound. First off, who would eat celery? Second off, I learned in science that if you add 100 lbs too your body you would weigh 100 lbs more. Being 8 years old I wrote it off as a crazy old woman spewing random thoughts.
Now I am 47 and a bit wiser. Grandma was almost right. You still cannot eat 100 lbs of celery but if you could, you would not gain any weight. Why is this? Because there are foods out there that have little to no calories or good calories that burn themselves up just by digesting them. The good ones also supply your body with nutrients that also help your body. There are also empty calories. These are the foods that have been processed by us and have lost their nutritional value.
Why do I no longer count calories? I have started buying food that supplies me with good calories and great nutritional value. Things like fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, turkey breast, chicken breast, and lots of other great food. I have also started walking daily for about a half hour and I have lost 56 lbs. in 4 months. I lost 18 lbs in the first 2 weeks and did not count one calorie. I have been losing about 1 pound a week for several weeks now.
